Our squad has changed a lot over the years! Our first meeting was May 19th, 1954 and we started responding to calls on October 1, 1954. We were originally based in the old Bensley Volunteer Fire Department, est. 1948, located at 5803 Wentworth Street in a development known as Bensley Village just south of the Richmond city limits with a used 1948 Packard purchased from the Henrico Volunteer Rescue Squad. Today, we operate out of two stations with five ambulance bays and four ambulances, each of which costs more than $230,000 and carries nearly $180,000 in equipment!
In our first 12 operational months, we answered 146 emergency calls. In 2022, we answered 536 calls for service, and our members donated a total of 15,420 hours of unpaid time to the community, whether on an ambulance or in administration. |
In a first for the Richmond area, our squad welcomed both men and women. We started with 38 charter members, 12 of which were women. We now have 42 active members coming from different walks of life from high school to medical school, office jobs to public safety from all over the Richmond area.
In the end, you can reach us in an emergency just like any other rescue squad or fire department: 911. Our original number (82-8998) won’t even work any more — when we started doing this, numbers only had six digits! |
